Abstract

We take this opportunity to present this book on the Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy (SR) method of crystal growth to young students, researchers and readers who are entering into this fascinating field of crystal growth. The pursuit of understanding crystal growth is as ancient as the study of materials themselves. From the dazzling formations of natural crystals to the precise structures synthesized in modern laboratories to growing a bulk single crystal. These crystals have long fascinated scientists and artisans alike. This book aims to bridge the gap between the fundamental principles of solution crystal growth and a detailed explanation of SR crystal growth methods, offering a comprehensive guide for both seasoned researchers and newcomers to the discipline.

This book is designed to provide a thorough exploration of the techniques and nucleation kinetics theories underpinning crystal growth. We begin with the basics of crystal structure and growth mechanisms, then the materials synthesis and detailed explanation given about the types of nucleation involved in the solution crystals growth method. Each chapter integrates theoretical concepts with clear explanations, illustrated through case studies on the modified SR methods.

Our goal is to make this complex field accessible and engaging. Whether you are a student embarking on your academic journey, a researcher seeking to deepen your expertise or a professional working in related industries, this book offers valuable insights and practical guidance. We hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the elegance of crystal growth and its transformative potential. The journey of writing this book has been both challenging and rewarding. We extend our gratitude to colleagues, students, and mentors who have contributed their expertise and enthusiasm. Special thanks to those who have reviewed drafts and provided invaluable feedback, and to the broader scientific community whose innovations continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. We invite you to explore the world of crystal growth with curiosity and an open mind. As you delve into the pages that follow, may you discover not only the intricate beauty of crystals but also the endless possibilities they hold for the future. Knowing the enormous importance and technical relevance of this high-technology crystal growth area, several universities/colleges are introducing this subject to students at various levels.

This introductory edition was prepared with great care and is intended to provide the background necessary for the entrants. The concepts of crystal growth phenomena, various crystal growth technologies, instrumentation aspects and their applications to various fields are discussed in detail in this treatise. Apart from crystal growth concepts, an overview of the basic physics of some properties of materials is also intentionally discussed for the benefit of the readers. This will enable the readers to grow crystals as per their requirements and specifications. We have exercised adequate care to deliver the reader with the latest developments in this arena. We hope that this treatise will provide a stimulus to the thought for those already involved in this field, but also serve as a general introduction to the subject for researchers involved in various fields whose contribution is needed ultimately to further nurture this field.
