Abstract

This chapter presents a detailed assessment of dielectric properties of several types of single crystals, highlighting their significance in material research and engineering. The introduction commences with the implication of dielectric behaviour of crystals, such as dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and impedance, to understand the properties of crystals. The chapter also relates dielectric properties and polarisation mechanisms, emphasising the temperature and frequency dependence of these properties and their critical role in relaxation processes in shaping the behavior of the crystal. A primary focus in this chapter is on the methodologies used for characterising and measuring the dielectric properties, including the types of instruments such as dielectric spectroscopy, impedance analysers, and LCR meters. Applications of the dielectric analyses of the single crystals are also reviewed, mainly in identifying the defects, assessing the quality of the crystal, and understanding polarisation mechanisms. The role of dielectric properties in electronic and optoelectronic devices, such as capacitors, semiconductors, and piezoelectric materials, is also explored in this chapter. It also highlights the emerging trends in the techniques used for dielectric characterisation and the growing potential of dielectric characterisation analyses in the fields of materials science, and energy storage, providing future possibilities for further research and applications.
