India can boast that it cultivates 61 annual and 4 perennial vegetable crops for commercial purposes, making it the nation with the most vegetable crops grown worldwide. Indians are primarily vegetarians and rely on vegetables for the majority of the nutrients and minerals that make up the most important part of a balanced diet. Recent studies have also demonstrated the health benefits of the antioxidants present in vegetables, raising the worth and lustre of these crops.
